3rd Ceremonial Guard Co./Body Bearers:

Many fond memories of Camp David and walking guard duty on Aspen Lodge. I was there during Ike's and MacMillian's meeting in April, 1960 as well as the later
summit with Khrushchev.

Was in the Capitol Rotunda during Kennedy's inauguration on 1/20/61 and still have one of the orginal programs that shows the seating arrangements and a diagram of the President's platform.

My father, Dick Jacques, served on the Silent Drill Team and Presidential Honor Guard while stationed at 8th & I from '59 to '62. I too am a Marine Corps veteran (of six years) and welcome any correspondence from any, and all, that knew my dad. Sadly, he passed away in 1991, but was proud to be a part of the Marine Barracks' great history. My dad actually met my mom at the Slop Shoot on a blind date... amazing.

Hello Fellow Marines,

I was selected out of Camp Lejeune in 1959. A new platoon was created at that time. I was in the platoon for approximately 2 years...I did it all...Camp David, Arlington Cemetary, Iwo Memorial, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier...Joint Services...White House Duties. I was with President Ike and Kennedy.

After my duty in the platoon, I was selected to work in the Ceremonial Guard Company Office under the command of Captain Morris.

Thereafter, I was transfered to the 2nd Marine Corps Wing.

I served as Accountant for the Staff NCO Club and the Rec Fund (detached to H & S Company)from 1960 until June 1962. I participated in John F. Kennedy's Innaugaration, his visit to the barracks in 1961. The work (regular and ceremonial), at the barracks was tough and professional, but the pride gained was incomparable. I wouldn't trade my experience at 8th & "I" for the world. I still participate in the Marine Corps League here in Columbia, SC (H. E. Wilson Detach. 1141). The expression "Once a Maine, Always a Marine:" is very true, and most especially of those who have served at Marine Barracks, 8th & "I". Semper Fi !!!

served from the spring of 1976 Parris Island and then was shipped to Germany for a short term. My long service was spent @ Camp Hanson,OKI as MP. I was sent back to the states near the end of my 2 years to go out on an exercise and was blinded with CS gas for 6 months which I spent in a VA hospital. I was lucky enough to regain some vision to be deemed "legally blind". I was paid VA bebefits for a while until they kept sending me farther and farther away until I just couldn't get to the appointments any more, so I was fed up. Then, my apartment was robbed and while I was defending myself, I injured the intruder and was sent to prison for 5 years. During this time, my girl-friend destroyed all my papers and took off on me. About 5 years ago, another ladyfriend got involved and started a vendetta against the military to fight for me. She even got a congressman involved and he was sent back a letter stating that there were no records on me. There is also no FBI file on me after being in prison. The VA has no record of ever paying me and the hospital "lost my records" after being there for 6 months. Am I dreaming this? If someone out there can remember me, PLEASE CONTACT ME !!!!! OR, better yet, if there is a platoon photo....
I believe my DI was Rodriguez or Ramirez and he was about 5'4" and 175lb. I also remember a court martial involving a Lt. Ashbolt immediately following my blinding accident due to my disorientat-ion. This was in 1978 in San Diego and I was in Balboa Hospi-tal briefly before being trans-ferred to Chillicothe VA Hosp. in Ohio.
If there is anyone who can help at all, I would greatly appreciate it as I am starting to think I am going nuts!

Just found this website today. Still trying to slog through all these messages to see if I know anybody. I was in Guard Section of Headquarters Company in 1976 & 77. The Bicenntenial year was busy but awesome. Also spent a year in Special Services in the Bachelor Enlisted Quarters. Except for Parris Island and ITS at Pendleton, my whole tour was at "8th" & "I". I remember that even though I was only a LCPL, General Jaskilka used to always stop and talk with me because we were both from Connecticut. He was a great guy.

Served in the Corps 66-86. Served at 8th & I 71-76. I was in H&S Co. I was the BArracks Armorer (down in the basement) and probably issued an M1 Garrand to some of you guys.
I arrived at 8th & I as a Sgt, made SSgt while there and was selected for GySgt before leaving. My wife passed away while I was there and my children and I will never forget the kindness everyone showed us. Mrs. Cushman even had my wife come to tea in the CMC house while she was ill and she felt quite honored to sit with general officer's wives as the wife of a Sgt. I retired again in 2002 and moved to the U.S. Virgin Islands. From 86 to 02 I lived in Alaska. Life has been good, the Corps is still great. We have a very active MCA down here and celebrate every Nov.

I can still hear the cleats coming down the wooden stairs of the old horse stables in the Navy Yard. I still remember riding the buses to the burials, the sunset parades, Iwo memorial. I was there l961-l963. Carried the guide for Ceremonial Guard Company. Corporal Lempicki are you still out there? Remeber Capt. King and Sgt Stronick, Tex at the guard shack. Hell, I can still feel the grass under my feet and the satifaction of having the pike fall outside the wooden platform at the parades. We did a special parade for Kennedy. I've got some pictures I'd never part with.

Marines,

Greetings to the 8th & I Association...

I wanted to make mention of something your members may be interested in.... a 2004 Calendar for Marines. These are the 'best of the best' digitized photos from Marine Barracks, Washington, D.C. (8th & I) with historical annotations from the Oldest Post of the Corps.... The calendars have been produced by former Barracks Marines in San Antonio.

I have attached a graphic of the type of photos to be found in this 9" by 12" calendar... on 100# gloss paper. If you think that it would be a worthwhile to inform your members of this opportunity, please feel free to use this information on your website announcements....

SERVERED ON THE DRILL TEAM IN 1953 WITH MARINES SUCH AS SGT JOHNSON,SGT PIPPIN, SGT BRUCKNER, CPL. CANNON,PFC WAYNE PILNY,RAY NOBLE PFC GREEN,CPL COE JUST TO MENTION A FEW. AT THAT TIME WE USED 03 RIFLES AND I AM NOT DOWNGRADING THE PRESENT DRILL TEAMS BUT I HAVE SEEN A FEW OF THEIR PAREADES AND IN MY OPINION OUR ERA OF DRILL SHOWED MORE COMPLEX TYPE OF DRILL. I STILL SALUTE THE PRESENT DRILL TEAM AND THE EFFORT PUT FORTH TO ACCOMPLISH A SHOW THAT WILL MAKE THE CORP STAND OUT. I UNDERSTAND THAT THE DRILL TEAM AT PRESENT HAS A COIN OF SOME KIND THAT ALL MEMBERS HAVE OR CAN OBTAIN, IF THIS IS SO WOULD IT BE POSSIBLE TO OBTAIN THIS COIN.

I FORGOT TO MEMTION THAT I AM STILL IN CONTACT WITH WAYNE PILNY, JACK TEMPLE AND MAX ESLER,JOE MAGLION WHO WERE ALSO ON THE DRILL TEAM DURING MY TOUR THERE. FROM THERE I WENT TO NAPLES ,ITALY WERE I WAS ATTACHED TO NATO AND THE 6TH FLEET FOR SECURITY.(1954-1956) I FINISHED MY TOUR AT CAMP PENDELTONIN MID 1957 WHERE I WAS AN INSTRUCTOR.

I returned from Vietnam in 1969 (1st.PltSgt.M 3/7). I was promoted to SSgt. 1Sept. '71 and shortly thereafter, I was sent to Washington from Camp Lejeune to be interviewed for a Platoon Sergeants position at 8th & I. Is there anyone else out there who had to be interviewed before coming to 8th & I ?
I was /interviewed/selected by Capt. James Jones in '71 to come to 8th & I. I reported on-board before the '72 parade season. My research of me going to 8th & I was based on 200 SRB that were screened for this one position. That there were only seven African American SSgt.'s selected for interviews and that I was one choosen.
I had become a "choosen few" and I was damn proud of it and I still am. Well,I hit the deck "sliding n' gliding". The first night I stayed in the Commandants House (the house was vacant at the time)for three days because there was no SNCO room for me in the old Barracks. Is there anyone out there who can say the slept in the Commandants House?
I served as 1stPlt.Sgt. MCI Co from 72-73. I was selected for the Parade Staff and participated in all required ceremonies until '75. Including, Nixons inaugeration, the Home With Honor Parade (Vietnam Vets.) in New York City,
and President Johnson funeral (it was freezing that day), and we were the only military unit there without our overcoats! Nixon resigned after the Watergate break-in, Gen. Cushman became our Commandant (he had gained weight while at the CIA). It was rumored that he used a case of masking tape to get into his blues.
Does anyone remember when a naked man streaked across the parade deck during a ceromony and got away by going out by the Commandants house onto 9th street? I wonder if they got that on film. What ever happened to that "Evening Parade" movie they shoot in '72 or '73? We repeated the pass in review until almost midnight until Gen. Cushman
called "cut". I thank 1stSgt. David Bradley, SSgt. Leo Roththough, SSgt. Barry ("Bones")Barnes, Sgt. Sterling (Plt. guide) and the entire'72 1stPlt. members for helping me. Thank you '72 SDT for allowing me to be your PltSgt. for the SNCO Parade. Now that really felt good being out "on the grass with you guys".
I work in Arlington, Va and I drive pass the Barracks often.I see they are building a new Barracks and Band Hall under the bridge near 7th Stree. I want to hear from those I served with. Please say a prayer for the loved ones of Col. Crawford and GySgt. French ("Frenchie") who have passed away. I have passed this website on to 1stSgt.
Terry (ret.), MGySgt. Washington (ret.) and MSgt. Michael Coles (of "Gods Company" bldg. #58). See you at the 2003 Reunion. Semper Fi

I served as the Post Supply Officer during this time, under the command of Col John B. Sollis, and along side some of the finest Marines I've known in my career. Marines with the likes of MSgt Scotty Cobb, SSgt Newt Sanson, SSgt Lynn Godbout, SSgt Cody Riggs, Cpl Toni Posey, Cpl Steve Maynard, LCpl Mady Engle, and I'm sure there are others. Best wishes to all. Semper Fi. CWO5 Mike Brletich

Hey.. I just found this page and low and behold I see a message over a year old from Newt! How cool is that! Sorry I didn't see it sooner.
And you didn't leave and e-mail address. I too served at Post Supply from 1992 to 1994. And had the pleasure of serving with one of the hardest working supply
crews the barracks had seen a quite a while. We even had the pleasure of recieving special recognition and award for turn Post Supply around
from a section that previously had failed in every conceivable functional area of the I&I inspection to being the section who passed with flying
colors. It was alot of hard work and late nights and weekends but CWO B bought us a round or two during those months.

I have been off active duty now for almost 6 years (some of you may recall that I went through a bout of cancer before I transferred). I have trying
hard to enjoy civilian life but you just don't find the coorperative spirit, hard work and commaraderie (I hope I spelled that right) that I found in
my nine years in the Corp. Hope everyone is doing well and I would love to hear
from you...

I am the 22d Color Sergeant of the Marine Corps. I was stationed at the barracks from August 1989 until May 1993. I cherished the time I spent at the barracks and never took one single day for granted. I have since been selected to be a warrant officer, served in that capacity for six years and was selected to be a Limited Duty Officer (Captain) in 2001. I said when I left the barracks that nothing I could ever achieve in the Marine Corps could compare to my time at the "Oldest Post Of the Corps". I was right!

I was stationed at 8th & I from 1985 to early 1988.
I enjoyed my tour there and even enjoyed when they tossed me to the fleet to 1/8. 1/8 was great, had a bad rep but was a very good unit. I currently work with a few other people that also were stationed at the Barracks. I even to this day compete in Honor Guard competitions with others Public Safety departments that also have past 8th and I Marines as part of their units. I would love to hear from others that remember me from the Barracks and from my entire Marine Corps tour of duty. E-mail me. I still live close to Washington, DC and get to sunset parades as often as possible. The standards at the Barracks have not changed. My old unit is still top notch. Anyone have any idea what happened to SSGT Rosche? He was one of the best Marines I ever served with!!!
Take care and SEMPER FI!!!

Hey PACO....I read the lines you left here. Thank you for the extra laps you gave me around the DC Armory for calling you PACO during my tryouts for SDP.

Also did a tour at Camp David during that time.

Very interesting time. President Nixon's second inauguration. Presidents Truman and Johnson funerals. All the comings and goings at Camp David during Watergate. I left about 2 weeks prior to his resignation, as I recall.

They were just starting construction on the new barracks at that time as well.

I served at 8th and I in 1967 and 1968. I was assigned to the Staff NCO Club as bookkeeper and my parade duties as NCOIC included the Bell ringing, the Chesty walking The lowerinf of the Colors and the "popping" of the reviewing officer's flag. Sorry I missed the reunion, but I just found out about it.

Greetings Marines. This is my first visit to this site. Very nice indeed. Some of you may be aware of our company - Good-To-Go Video. www.goodtogo1.com. We produce fiercely patriotic programs which focus exclusively on the United States Marine Corps. Our next production is a Special Bicentennial Edition of The Evening Parade, scheduled for release on Sep 15th, 2001. It's our most ambitious produciton to date and include archival footage from a 1955 Sunset Parade and the Barracks' Marines participation in the 1957 Edinburgh Military Tattoo. A portion of the proceeds from the video will benefit the fund to establish the Marine Corps Heritage Center in Quantico. We would greatly appreciate you guys helping us to spread the word about the new video. Keep up the great work. Once a Marine, Always a Marine. I want to thank those responsible for having one of the best reunion I have been to.Dallas and Sylvia Ricker,Joe Larkin and his wife , and who ever else had any thing to do with putting on this great and memorable reunion. I had a GREAT time. Got together with some of my buddies from the 2nd Platoon, Guard company, Drill Team from 1956 to 1958. We happened to be the leaders in starting the rifle toss, the first "Evening" parade with the lights. And just happened to be the best Drill Team ever. No offense to the other great Marines because you all are very good also...LOL...nothing like tooting your own horn, but thats what Marines are about"The Few The Proud and The FINEST" Looking forward to the next one. I was in the D&B from 1971 - 1975, when one of my lungs gave out, and I had to be discharged. I feel that i grew up a lot while in that prestegous 'Post'. I was Cerimonial Bugler in the Parade years of '74 &'75. Was on most all Burial details during that time.
I wish I could be there for the reunion, but my work prevents. Unfortunately, I will be in DC on business the next week. I plan to see the parade on Tuesday night while there.

Excelent site. Good work.

A Marine on Duty

I just wanted to get the day over with and go down to Smokey's
for a few cold ones. Sneaking a look at my watch, I saw the time, 1655.
Five minutes to go. Full dress was hot in the August sun. Oklahoma
summertime was as bad as ever -- the heat and humidity at the same level --
too damned high.

I saw the car pull into the drive, '69 or '70 model Deville, looked
factory-new. It pulled into the parking slot at a snail's pace.

An old woman got out so damned slow I thought she was paralyzed.
She had a cane and a sheaf of flowers, about four or five bunches as best I
could tell. I couldn't help myself. The thought came unwanted, and left a
slightly bitter taste:
"S..t! She's going to spend an hour, my damned hip hurts like hell and
I'm ready to get the hell out of here right, by-God, now!."

But my duty was to assist anyone coming in. Kevin would lock the
"in" gate and if I could hurry the old biddy along, we might make the last
half of happy hour.

I broke Post Attention. The hip made gritty noises when I took
the first step and the pain went up a notch. I must have made a real
military sight; middle-aged man with a small pot-gut and half a limp, in
Marine Full Dress Uniform, which had lost its razor crease about 30 minutes
after I began the watch at the cemetary.

I stopped in front of her, halfway up the walk. She looked up at me with an
old woman's squint.
"Ma'am, can I assist you in any way?"

She took long enough to answer. "Yes, son. Can you carry these
flowers. I seem to be moving a tad slow these days."

"My pleasure Ma'am." Well, it wasn't too much of a lie.

She looked again. "Marine, where were you stationed?"

"Vietnam, ma'am. Ground-pounder. '69 to '71."

She looked at me closer. "Wounded in action, I see. Well, done,
Marine. I'll be as quick as I can"

I lied a little bigger. "No hurry, Ma'am."

She smiled, and winked at me. "Son, I'm 85-years old and I can
tell a lie from a long way off. Let's get this done. Might be the last time
I can come. My name's Joanne Wieserman, and I've a few Marines I'd like to
see one more time."

"Yes, ma'am. At your service"

She headed for the World War I section, stopping at a stone. She
picked one of the bunches out of my arm and laid it on top of the stone.
She murmured something I couldn't quite make out. The name on the marble was

Donald S.Davidson, USMC, France 1918.

She turned away and made a straight line for the World War II section,
stopping at one stone. I saw a tear slowly tracking its way down her cheek.

She put a bunch on a stone; the name was Stephen X. Davidson,
USMC, 1943.

She went up the row a ways and laid another bunch on a stone,
Stanley J. Wieserman USMC, 1944.

She paused for a second, "Two more, son, and we'll be done."

I almost didn't say anything, but, "Yes, ma'am. Take your time."

She looked confused. "Where's the Vietnam section, son? I seem to
have lost my way."

I pointed with my chin. "That way, ma'am."

"Oh!" she chuckled quietly. "Son, me and old age ain't too
friendly."

She headed down the walk I'd pointed at. She stopped at a couple
of stones before she found the ones she wanted. She placed a bunch on Larry
Wieserman USMC, 1968, and the last on Darrel Wieserman USMC, 1970.

She stood there and murmured a few words I still couldn't make out. "OK,
son, I'm finished. Get me back to my car and you can go home."

"Yes, ma'am. If I may ask, were those your kinfolk?"

She paused. "Yes, Donald Davidson was my father; Stephan was my
uncle; Stanley was my husband; Larry and Darrel were our sons. All killed
in action, all Marines." She stopped, whether she had finished, or couldn't
finish, I don't know. And never have. She made her way to her car, slowly,
and painfully.

I waited for a polite distance to come between us and
double-timed it over to Kevin waiting by the car. "Get to the out-gate
quick, Kev. I have something I've got to do."

Kev started to say something but saw the look I gave him. He
broke the rules to get us there down the service road. We beat her, she
hadn't made it around the rotunda yet.

"Kev, stand to attention next to the gate post. Follow my lead."
I humped it across the drive to the other post.

When the Cadillac came puttering around from the hedges and began the short
straight traverse to the gate, I called in my best gunny's voice: "Tehen
Hut! Present Haaaarms!"

I have to hand it to Kev, he never blinked an eye; full dress
attention and a salute that would make his DI proud. She drove through
that gate with two old worn-out soldiers giving her a send off she deserved,

for service rendered to her country, and for knowing Duty, Honor and
Sacrifice.

I am not sure, but I think I saw a salute returned from that
Cadillac.
