James E. Johnson

Citation:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as a Squad Leader in a Provisional Rifle Platoon composed of Artillery men and attached to Company J, Third Battalion, Seventh Marines, First Marine Division (Reinforced), in action against enemy aggressor forces at Yudam-ni, Korea, on 2 December 1950.  Vastly outnumbered by a well-entrenched and cleverly concealed enemy force wearing the uniforms of friendly troops and attacking his platoon's open and unconcealed positions, Sergeant Johnson unhesitatingly took charge of his platoon in the absence of the leader and exhibiting great personal valor in the face of a heavy barrage of hostile fire, coolly proceeded to move about among his men, shouting words of encouragement and inspiration and skillfully directing their fire.  Ordered to displace his platoon during the fire fight, he immediately placed himself in an extremely hazardous position from which he could provide covering fire for his men.  Fully aware that his voluntary action meant either certain death or capture to himself, he courageously continued to provide effective cover for his men and was last observed in a wounded condition single-handedly engaging enemy troops in close hand grenade and hand-to-hand fighting.  By his valiant and inspiring leadership, Sergeant Johnson was directly responsible for the successful completion of the platoon's displacement and the saving of many lives.   His dauntless fighting spirit and unfaltering devotion to duty in the face of terrific odds reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.

Andrew Marco Sherman

Citation:

The Navy Cross is presented to Andrew Marco Sherman, Second Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism as Platoon Commander, Second Platoon, Company E, Second Battalion, Fourth Marines, Third Marine Division (Reinforced), Fleet Marine Force, northwest of Cam Lo in Quang Tri Province, Republic of Vietnam, on 8 August 1966.  In carrying out its assigned mission of assisting in the evacuation of a reconnaissance team which was surrounded by North Vietnamese, Second Lieutenant Sherman's platoon was attacked on two sides in great strength and rapidly encircled; heavy automatic weapons fire and grenades inflicted fifty percent casualties upon them.  With the North Vietnamese force threatening to overrun the position, Second Lieutenant Sherman, with complete disregard for his own safety, moved about through extremely heavy rifle and automatic weapons fire in full view of the enemy, directing the fire fight and giving encouragement to his men.  The viciousness of the assault by the North Vietnamese pushed the defenders into tenuous secondary positions.  Second Lieutenant Sherman, undeterred by the five-to-one odds, rallied his remaining men and led a counterattack back across forty meters of open, fire-swept terrain, and regained the original positions.  By this time, the force had suffered sixty percent casualties and the situation was deteriorating rapidly.  Repeated attempts at evacuation were thwarted by the loss of four helicopters.  Second Lieutenant Sherman bravely continued to move from position to position deploying his weapon, and shouting orders and words of encouragement until he was mortally wounded.  By his valiant leadership, outstanding courage, and stirring example in the face of tremendous odds, he inspired his men and gave them the spirit to repulse the enemy and crush the attack.  His steadfast devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.  He gallantly gave his life for his country.

Anthony C. Viggiani

Afghanistan, Operation Enduring Freedom

Citation:

The Navy Cross is presented to Anthony C. Viggiani, Sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism in action against Anti-Coalition Force Militia in Zabol Province, Afghanistan, serving as a squad leader for Charlie Company, Battalion Landing Team, First Battalion, Sixth Marines, Twenty-Second Marine Expeditionary Unit, deployed with commander, United States Fifth Fleet during Operation Enduring Freedom 3 June 2004.  While leading a company assault against an enemy held ridgeline north of the village of Khabargho, Sergeant Viggiani and his squadron came under heavy and accurate fire from an enemy force well entrenched inside a cave, pinning down one of his teams and wounding two of his Marines.  Moving across exposed ground, under observation and fire from an adjacent enemy position, Sergeant Viggiani maneuvered to the cave opening, but achieving no effect on the enemy.  Braving enemy fire from the adjacent enemy position, he went back to retrieve a fragmentation grenade.  Again, under a hail of fire, he moved to within feet of the cave opening and employed the grenade to eliminate the enemy position, which was actively firing upon friendly forces.  Killing three enemy fighters, Sergeant Viggiani destroyed the enemy strongpoint and allowed his company to continue their advance up to the ridgeline, solidly defeating the enemy by killing a total of fourteen Anti-Coalition fighters.  In the process, he was wounded by rifle fire from the adjacent enemy position, yet he continued to lead his Marines in the attack.  By his outstanding display of decisive leadership, unlimited courage in the face of enemy fire and utmost dedication to duty, Sergeant Viggiani reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
